News Digest: Vučić and Brnabić meet with foreign officials, protests and strikes continue

Aleksandar Vučić met with NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg. Kosovo and recent tensions were a part of the discussion. Stoltenberg invited Belgrade and Pristina to continue the dialogue. Vučić pointed out that it is important for Serbia, together with NATO and KFOR, “to ensure the safety of Serbs in Kosovo and Metohija”. “We also discussed the possibility of starting joint military exercises again,” added Stoltenberg. Farmers continue road block protests. Farmers in Vojvodina blocked a major roads on Monday and Tuesday, continuing their protest with demands for subsidies and lower diesel fuel prices. Farmers said that they would remain on the streets until the agreements with the Government are respected and implemented. The first day of protests last week ended with a stand-off between farmers and local ruling Serbian Progressive Party (SNS) officials and supporters in front of the home of a protest organizer. Postal workers: Government gave us until Monday evening to end strike. Postal workers who protested Monday outside the Main Postal Center in Belgrade said the Serbian Government had rejected their demands and that they have been given until 10 pm Monday to end their strike. Serbian Post Office employees told on Monday evening that the strike continues. “We haven’t given up on the strike. The latest information is that it will continue.” (N1 Belgrade, 20 November 2023)

Tax Police and Crime Suppression Service (UKP) again at private courier service owned by United Group, which also owns government-critical media. The police entered the D Express courier company offices for the second time on Monday, without a warrant, but this time announced their visit. Following an exchange of legal arguments, the UKP unit decided against reviewing the documentation and presented the summons for the questioning of the company director. United Group, within which D Express also operates, has called on all relevant international organizations and institutions to unequivocally condemn this illegal attack against private property. PM Brnabić with EU ambassadors: Serbia ready for opening of Cluster 3. Ana Brnabić discussed on Monday with Head of the European Union (EU) Delegation to Serbia Emanuele Giaufret and the ambassadors of EU member states further steps in the process of European integration. Brnabić pointed out that Serbia had continuously worked on the opening of Cluster 3, which is fully ready, adding that she expects a positive signal from the EU for its opening.
