Get out the vote campaign launched by the civil society

BELGRADE – Civic Initiatives, a Belgrade-based CSO, announced on Thursday that the activists group across the county have joined forces to mobilize the citizens to vote in elections and participate in safeguarding the ballot boxes.

The campaign, called “How much more?” (“Dokle više?”) will gather university and high school students, as well as celebrities, the organisation announced.

“We are choosing on 17 December – we are choosing the country in which we will live, we are choosing for the generations to come,” said Maja Stojanović, Director of the Civic Initiatives.

Among the participants of the campaign will be an informal group “Students Against Violence”, which took part in this year’s massive protest organised following two mass shootings in May.

The civil society campaigns for raising voters’ turnout in Serbia were common in the 2000s, but no serious efforts have been made in this regard in recent years.

In last year’s election, the turnout was 58.6%. It last crossed 60% in 2008.

Experts, however, believe that the realistic turnout is higher than the official figures show, given the fact that many citizens are registered on the Electoral Roll but do not live in Serbia and rarely vote from abroad.
